Good Driving Habits While On The Road

By Adriana Noton

In order to have good driving habits, there are a few things that you must learn. You have to be mindful of other road users. Having a roadworthy vehicle is also a good habit. Therefore, you have to take care of your vehicle mechanically.

The first rule of driving is safety first. Always fasten your seat belt before you embark on your journey. This is a life saver in case of any unexpected incidents on the road. As a driver, it is important to ensure that everyone in the vehicle has fastened their safety belts. Extra care is needed when travelling with children. They can be a distraction as they need constant attention. Make sure they are safely secured with the correct seat belt. Do not let an adult hold the child as this does not provide any protection to the child in case of an accident. Always remember to lock the car door.

Make use of mirrors, rear view and side mirrors so as to be aware of your surroundings. Adjust the driver side and passenger side mirrors before you start to drive. The side mirrors are in optimal position when you can see a portion of the door handle at the bottom end of side mirror. If you are using a vehicle you are not used to, take a moment to familiarize yourself.

Limit your speed to what the law allows. Do not drive so fast that you cannot brake in time in case of an emergency. Your speed as a driver, however, depends on a number of variables. For instance, if the road is frosty or slippery, then you should drive slower than on a normal road. Also, avoid going too fast when the visibility is compromised. For example, it is safer to slow down when in fog or dust.

Be alert when at the wheel for your safety. When under the influence of drugs, it is advisable not to drive. Some of the narcotics are known to be impure hence one can under estimate their strength. Alcohol also impairs judgment. It can be hard to estimate distance when under the influence and people have been known to take stupid risks. If you intend to drive for a long time, be sure to have a good night sleep.

It is advisable to drive only when in the right state of mind. When your emotions are on a high due to anger or anxiety you are likely to have errors of judgment. Calm yourself down first before you get behind the wheel.

When on the road, keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. It should be a distance that you can cover in about four to five seconds at the speed you are driving. This will prevent rear end collisions.

When overtaking, make sure you check your rear view mirror and also check for blind spots. Do not overtake at a climbing lane especially if your vehicle is not fast enough. When another vehicle is passing you, avoid directing them.

Ensure that your car is always well maintained. This will help you avoid unforeseen incidences with mechanical failure. Change the oil regularly and fill up on gas when reduced to about a quarter full. Do not rev your engine; let it warm up on its own. Be courteous and give way to other road users and enjoy a fairer auto insurance bill.
