Advantages Of Using Biodegradable Hydraulic Fluid

By Cathy Mercer

Biodegradable hydraulic fluid is used to transmit power in hydraulic machines. These devices use the principle that a small force exerted is transmitted through an incompressible fluid thus resulting in a much larger force. This principle is very important as it results in creation of large mechanical advantage in a wide range of machines.

It is important to note that most high power tools and machinery in many spheres of technology highly depend on this principle to run and carry out complex tasks. Some of these machines include excavators, power steering, braking systems and air flight controls systems. Over the years different kinds of fluids have been used to transmit this power.

Compressibility of any fluid significantly reduces the amount of power conveyed from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder of a such a system. Another important quality of such fluids is that they should have good thermal capacity and conductivity. Like all other compression processes, a large amount of heat is usually generated during the transmission of pressure.

For a particular fluid to be considered effective it must have certain qualities. One of these qualities is that it must be incompressible. This quality ensures effective transmission of pressure and force. In connection to this, it should also have low volatility and fast air release. Also, it must have low foaming tendency. Any contrary qualities of such fluids significantly reduce the effectiveness of these systems.

The most common oil used in pressure transmission is mineral oil. This can be mainly attributed to the fact that it is readily available all over the world in large quantities. It is important to note that this oil does not naturally decompose thus causes pollution when exposed to the environment. In cases of oil spills during accidents or damage of hydraulic equipment the oil can accumulate in a particular Eco system to a level that interferes with animal and plant species.

Non biodegradable substances always pollute the environment when they find their way into the various Eco systems. Cases of oil spills have great negative effects on the environment thus there is a great need to find other alternatives. This recommended fluid is made from natural oils thus have reduced negative effects when it in contact with the sensitive environments.

Introduction of natural oil as the pressure transmitting fluid has led to the development of biodegradable fluids that are used in environment sensitive applications. Some of these areas include marine areas where the probability of an oil spill is high. It is important to note that these environmental friendly fluids help large offshore corporations reduce their fines in the event of oil spills in hydraulic lines.

Biodegradable hydraulic fluid has become a very common feature of high power machines that operate in underwater mining operations. Some of these operations include oil and gas mining where the use of high power hydraulic systems is inevitable. In the cases where non biodegradable fluids have been used, accidents that results in oil spill have caused environmental damage and even death of certain animal and plant species.
