How Heavy Operators Work

By Ned Limardo

Before the time of the Industrial Revolution, every construction of houses, buildings and infrastructures were made mechanically by the hands of the workers. When machines were invented and highly became popular and demanded across the globe, constructions started to become automated and needing less number of manpower. It was also the time when nations started to invent heavy equipment to make the work easier, faster and more efficient.

These machines are built to excavate or dig and yes, a shovel does fit that definition but normally, it refers to fast digging heavy equipment. Even with the economy in a slump, there are job opportunities.

With this development, skills trainings are widely being offered globally to cope with the increasing demand for heavy equipment operators. However, while this job requires technical skills and appropriate trainings, some professionals do not look into this kind of job as decent job. Unfortunately, it is referred as a dirty job, in contrast to the classy and collared jobs that most people prefer.

There are also smaller excavating machines that are fairly mobile. They are called compact excavators and they are often seen digging trenches for laying cable or sewage pipes. Compact excavators also dig holes for planting large trees and other small projects.

On the other hand, the most common type of heavy equipment excavator is the shovelling excavator. This is an equipment that is capable of digging fast. Like other excavators, it also has a house where the operator can operate the machine. This is like a cabin where the operator controls the arms through the built-in levers in the cabin.

Heavy equipment work offers a good salary and oftentimes, great benefits as well. Statistics show that construction equipment operators held about 469,300 jobs in 2008. Some worked in the construction industry. Others worked in heavy and civil engineering construction, building highways, bridges, or railroads. And there were others who worked for the government, mining, manufacturing or utility companies.

Typically, the heavy equipment operators are being offered a good salary, especially in the developed countries. This is because supply of manpower for this job is relatively scarce due to the nature of work. Fewer people are encouraged to this kind of job since most prefer "decent" jobs that usually refer to collared jobs.

However, this kind of job is the most abundant in the whole world since development is continuous, especially in roads, buildings, malls and other infrastructures.
