How to really install a baby car seat. The Guide that works!

By Claire James

This is the reality check guide because no matter how well the manufacturers put together the instruction manual, or the baby seat for that matter, when it comes to actually installing it in your car, you will find it is not quite the same. This is because all the manufacturers forget to factor in something major into the installation equation.

Cars! They come in all shapes and sizes and with this unique design comes different interior layouts and seat shapes, resulting in baby capsules and infant booster seats that never quite sit how they are supposed to - no matter how well you follow the instructions.

There are services that can install your baby car seat for you but I recommend learning how to do it yourself. Not only do you save your money, but at some point you are going to have to remove the car seat for cleaning so you may as well learn how to do it right the first time.

I cannot even count how many different cars and car seat combinations I have encountered, but needless to say, I have learned first hand how each seat requires a different approach, and only logic and some clever thinking can help install the car seat the way it should be installed. Let's look at what has worked for me.

The services that install your carseat always seem to make the seat fit snug when you leave, but soon after you notice how unsecure it feels, and that is why I am against these install services

Sometimes the seat will fit snugly just on its own and in this instance you are cheering and there is nothing more you need to worry about, but more often than not this is not the case so you need to call in the 'special mounting brackets' otherwise known as towels.

The Towel or two placed either behind the back or under the front of the seat will usually stop the seat from moving and allow the fasteners to do their job, but sometimes the fix is far simpler than that.

The reason for the baby carseats not fitting securely is to do with the shape of the backseat of the car, and because the baby seat is designed with a curve, if the angle on the backseat is not right, the curve allows the seat to roll back and forth, and sometimes side to side! Using a towel can fix this, but not always.

The obvious fix comes from looking at the seat itself and more so the rocker bar at the back. A lot of the toddler seats have these to allow the seat to incline more or less and by simple removing this completely, you take any and all wobble out of the seat, allowing it to be installed more securely.

There are many guides on how to install an infant or child car seat, but it really comes down to following the instructions and if there is still some wobble in the seat, applying a bit of logic and a towel or two. Always keep the child's health and safety in mind and keep within the law as well of course.
