Make a Car Donation in Maryland to Help Your Favorite Local Charity

By Sonia Jones

Car donation in Maryland is attributed to the currently highly popular process of off loading unused, redundant or even junk vehicles to philanthropic organizations for the purpose of a tax benefit. Though, on the one side, many charitable organizations have benefited substantially from this, some critics aver that the practice is more an asylum for tax deduction than true goodwill.

The unregulated era of tax deduction against car donations in Maryland was suspended in the beginning of 2005 followed by the imposition of Jobs Creation Act of 2004, which brought in its wake, stricter controls on limiting the tax deductions applied by the donor to the value of the charity's return on sales. This facility is available to US residents only.

Some of the restrictions that the donor had to comply with are; the vehicle to be donated has to have a certificate of road worthiness, it should be intact, and not have been exhibited for public sale. He should also make sure that the charity to whom he was making the donation, qualify for a 501(c)(3) status or should find mention in the IRS publication 78.

You can only make car donation to religious organizations that can accept it legally. Other donations are not liable for tax deductions. A proof of sale by the aid organization would be better than seeking a standard deduction and registering in form 1040, schedule A, would be a better proposition.

Notwithstanding of the sale proceeds of the vehicle obtained by the charity, any deduction of less than $500 for a car donation in Maryland will need only the donor's estimate. However, when the value exceeds $500, the sale proceeds accruing from, preferably an auction, is accepted by the IRS, if the tax return is accompanied by a written receipt from the charity.

A car donation in Maryland can use returns of sale based on the commercial market estimate not including the estimates of repair and depreciation, even if the recipient sells it at a lower price or wishes to retain it for own use.

Charities that lack in knowledge or administrative backup to handle a car donation in Maryland, seek assistance from auction specialists to help them out, on a fee, of course. If the charitable organization and the donor are not careful, a fraud agent could wipe the cream off a sale. Some agents are known to have made an adjustment of 90% of the sale.

When you have finalized your intention to make a car donation, please send the proposal with the particulars pertaining to the vehicle and its condition, to the prospective beneficiary. If the proposal is accepted, you may send them the ownership papers. They can then examine the papers and arrange to collect the vehicle. Different states of America have unique Departmental strictures, and so you would do well to peruse them thoroughly before any precipitate action in assigning the papers.

Pursuant to a tax deduction sale, the donor must necessarily get a receipt in hard or electronic form and IRS Form 1098-C in the event of a value in excess of $ 500. Maximum tax benefits can be realized for a car donation in Maryland only when you choose a charity that wishes to use the vehicle for its own or gives it to the truly needy, and is prepared to back you up with the pertinent paper work without delay.
