Choosing A Bicycle Seat For Men, Women and Kids

By Conan Hatch

Choosing the right bicycle seat for men, women or kids is just as important as choosing a handlebar, tires or bike frame. With the right choice, the rides will prove to be more enjoyable. So I have listed down five things that you can look for when choosing a bicycle seat. Is it worth following a list like this? Definitely yes. With some guidelines in place, you can confidently choose your right seat match.

1. Remember Your Size.

Yes, men and women have different body shapes and this is reflected in the array of bike seats. We have bicycle seats for men, women and kids. Then this needs to broken down further into whether the rider is slim, medium built or heavy. For example, a heavy bicycle rider would find a thin and firm model to be quite uncomfortable so choosing a wider base and a bit softer type would be more appropriate.

2. Kind of Rider

The kind of rider in terms of distance, and whether casual or serious, and also whether touring or racing should determine the type of bicycle seat one eventually chooses. Casual rider will enjoy the softer or gel type model seats if their rides are less than ten kilometers. The serious longer distance bicycle riders will find the firmer seat models to be more beneficial to their rides.

3. Have A Budget For A Brand

With the variety of brands on offer, it is easy to get caught up in buying a brand for the sake of the brand and lose a lot of money in the process. However, brand buying can be beneficial if combined with the other points raised in this article. Buying a seat based solely on price can also be unwise as these models might not fit well with your bicycle riding. My advice is to combine other factors mentioned here to make the right choice.

4. Base Your Choice On Whether You Are A Competitive Or A Casual Rider

Casual riding should allow you more flexibility in terms of softness and width of the seat while serious riding over an average of ten to 50 kilometers daily will mean that firmer and longer seats will be better. It has been found through research that a softer seat will be enjoyable for shorter rides while it will be very uncomfortable over regular and long distances.

5. Mountain or Road?

Mountain bikes will have their own world of bicycle seats as do the BMX and competitive bikes. So the kind of bicycle you have will determine the basic seat that you should buy. A mismatch between the bicycle and the seat will be wasteful and a very uncomfortable ride. Choose a seat that complements your bicycle frame and the type of bicycling you intend to do.
